Waste-to-Value

Modeling and simulation optimize the design and operation of waste revaluation and water treatment, maximizing efficiency and ROI by reducing the need for costly experimental tests.
From an ESG perspective, these tools promote sustainable management by reducing emissions, energy consumption and environmental impacts, while strengthening regulatory compliance and operational resilience. Together, they promote waste management that is more profitable, circular and aligned with global sustainability objectives.

Anaerobic Digestion

AD is the degradation of organic matter in the absence of oxygen, resulting in the production of biogas and digestate. This method is used for treating animal manure, food waste, and waste sludge, among others.

Biofertilizer production

The digestate, an organic byproduct of anaerobic digestion, contains beneficial compounds to improve soil quality and has the potential to replace chemical fertilizers.

Emerging renewable gases

Biogas, biomethane and/or H2 can be injected into the gas network and distributed together with natural gas for domestic and industrial use. The efficiency of the mixing process is crucial to achieve a uniform and consistent gas composition over time.
Selected Projects

Mechanical mixing for anaerobic digester

Virtual prototype of an industrial-scale stirred digester for velocity profile characterisation. Study of the effect of fluid rheological properties on flow patterns. Analysis of the quality of the mixture through the characterization of local retention times

Prediction of the quality of digestate as a biofertilizer

Extension of the ADM1 model to consider the properties of the digestate with respect to phosphorus and other compounds that promote precipitation.

H₂ injection into infrastructure

Determination of the best transport and mixing conditions of gases with different characteristics to ensure the calorific value of the resulting mixture.
